Lessons with Lola
Lesson Two of my C-PTSD Recovery Journey: Reflect
With my birthday recently behind me, I wanted to check in with myself. It’s easy to get caught up in the “Sunday scaries” of turning another year older (oOoOOoo… 31…) and let time slip by, especially when managing C-PTSD and mental health challenges.
But as spooky season approaches, I want to pause, be present, and count my blessings. Walking Lola is my favorite time for reflection. Some days, I soak up the sun; other days, I crave the quiet. No matter what, something always clicks. In those moments, I find the grounding I need to manage anxiety and navigate my C-PTSD symptoms.
Lola loves her walks too. She leaves her pre-frontal cortex at the door and goes nuts—sniffing every blade of grass, sitting in the shade, galloping through the yard. Her enthusiasm inspires me to reflect on my mental health journey. When I catch myself smiling at her antics or relaxing in the shade with her, that’s when things really sink in. (Fun fact: research shows outdoor time is great for mental health—extra points for bare feet on the grass, but watch out for wasps… learned that the hard way.)
Back to from the tangent: these walks give me perspective, spark creativity, and, most importantly, make me feel free. And that feeling? Priceless when you’re working on C-PTSD recovery and reclaiming your mental well-being.
TL;DR: Reflect often, embrace the hard stuff, and always sprinkle in gratitude. You’re more resilient than you think, and your future self will thank you.
Now, I challenge you: take a moment today to reflect. What are you grateful for? What steps can you take to support your mental health? Share your thoughts below, or even better—take a walk and let your mind wander. You’ve got this.
